Boston Terriers are one of the few native American breeds. They
have many nicknames including 'The American Gentleman.' They're
a recent addition to the AKC Stud Books compared to other breeds.
BT's were originally bred to be used in the fighting pits of Boston
(Massachusetts). They were a cross between Bull Terriers and Bulldogs.
The first crosses occurred in England, then some of the stock
were sent to America (as the common practice) where the breeding
continued.
In 1889, a group of Boston Terrier Owners, organized the American
Bull Terrier Club. They bred and showed their dogs as round heads
or bull terriers. Owners of Bulldogs and Bull Terriers objected
that they were really neither of the breeds. In 1891, they changed
their name to Boston Terrier Club of America, and wrote a standard
for what the Boston Terrier should be. They applied for entrance
to the AKC stud book, and were denied.
In 1893, they applied again. This time they where accepted and
the first Boston Terrier was admitted. He was Hector #28814, by
Bixby's Tony ex Dimple.
